VAMFC Meeting Minutes
June 22, 2001

I. Introductions (present, Karen Eriksen, Rip McAdams, Alan Forrest, Juliann Smith)

II. Treasurer's report (see attached)
We have in the neighborhood of $1000 to consider when making this year's plans.

III. Review of Organizational Purpose

    A. Education and Training: Counselors need MFT training/programs. We provide MFT Education, workshops to generalists, provide a resource in addition to what AAMFT and VA Tech have to provide
    B. Legislative Liaison: Monitor legislation pertinent to MFTs, related to licensure and regulations; liaison between practitioners in the field and the Board of Counselors. Ensure access to clients of MFTs, and ensure that MFTs can fully practice what they were trained to do
    C. University Liaison: Serve as an organizing group for university programs/contacts
    D. Presence for MFT Profession:  At VCA meetings and conventions, advocating for family and systemic thinking, representing members and helping them to be visible (for instance on CESNET and various listserves)
    E. Communication: to the members about the profession and current events related to the profession
    F. Creating a community: of MFT practitioners
    G. Benefits of Membership:
        1. Visibility
        2. Legislative liaison and monitoring
        3. Stipends for research and practice
        4. (not yet: referral via the web)
        5. Training and Workshops at reduced fees with strategically planned topics, sometimes for non-MFTs
        6. Cheap student membership

A. Sharon Krumpe has resigned as Secretary due to upcoming dissertation demands

C. Schedule for Leadership Process
    1. July 22nd: deadline for consents to run and bios
    2. August 5th: newsletter and ballot sent out
    3. August 20th: ballots back and counted
    4. New Officers by August 20th
    5. Karen to send out welcome, with meeting dates, board members' directory, strategic plan, web site address, ask for bio and directory information
VI. Visibility
A. Newsletter (2x/year) - may need to harrass people.
    1. Next one, should have Steve's column, Rip's two articles, ballott, and Karen's column,
    2. Newsletter in November - convention highlights and new leadership
B. Web Site -serves as archive for the organization
     -Board members to send digital pictures of themselves to Rip
    -Mission Statement to be bulletted in "What is VAMFC?"
    -Link for membership to IAMFC, ACA, VCA (whose address is www.pen.k12.va.us/go/vca/vcamain)
    -need to update VCA information about VAMFC
    -Provide links to listserves (Karen to get some to Rip)

    1. Have breakfast or lunch on Thursday or Friday, try to connect it with a dialogue/division sponsored event: Creating Systems Change in Schools through MFT and School Counselor Collaboration - Karen to check with Michelle Dowdy (and Suzie Leone) - ask Victoria re heading this up
    2. Campus Liaison Meeting - ask about how to do this
    3. Sign up for booth - Julianne to be in charge of this?? Scheduling people to staff?
        - who has the booth??

        - Share table with VACES - right inside the door?
    4. Business Cards for board members (ask Avis?)

D. Professional Development Event -
    1. This spring - Families in Crisis-Charlottesville
            Schedule: 10am-5pm with break for lunch
                            10-11:30 Session
                            11:30-1 lunch on own
                            1-2:30 session
                            Break - food
                            2:45-5 panel with dialogue and discussion
            -Charge: $10 students, $20 members, $40 non members, $50 at the door
            -Participants: Aim for 100
            -Facilities: UVA, Alan to check on this
            -Program - 6 speakers in 2-3 breakouts
            -Families and grief - Alan
            -Youth and violence - Rip
            -Diff cog dev levels in couples - Karen
            -Let's talk about sex - Victoria

            -Before next meeting, get email distribution list going, put out topics, speakers, and ask for other willing speakers and topics

VII. Membership Benefits/building

A. Get new membership committee chair to start things
B. Campus liaisons needed for non-connected campuses
     -develop committee
     -letter and flyer each semestester
    -with brochure for distribution to classes
    -meeting at VCA of committee of liaisons
    -Grad student scholarship - Rip to find criteria - send with letter and flyer in fall
D.  VAMFC member of the year - decide at September meeting
E.  Provide more links - membership person to develop
F. Consider listserve - Rip to check into how to do this
G. Logo: Alan to talk with Radford graphics to develop one


VIII. Rest of Strategic Plan:

A. Ask Steve to bring advocacy and legislative information for next meeting
B. Review bylaws Steve sent out for next meeting; ask him to send them out again
C. Julianne to email treasurer's report (for web site)


IX. Meeting times

1. September 14th - 10-2 - Charlottesville - Place to be announced
2. November meeting at VCA
3. Need to schedule to rest of the meetings in September with new leadership present
4. VCA Board Meetings: May, VCA convention, January Legislative Day
