Target Grade/Subject

Our target population for this lesson plan is fifth grade, PowerPoint literate students new to our classroom. This will be a beginning of the year, get to know you activity. It will incorporate students' computer skills and their interests by allowing them to share their background and hobbies with the class. These are students who like to work on the computer with their classmates. These students are at the concrete operational development stage. This stage emphasizes using concrete examples, which can make the computer useful for presenting more abstract information.

Objectives

The SOL that will be targeted in this lesson plan is English for fifth graders. The SOL objectives are listed below:

• The student will make planned oral presentations
  • Determine appropriate content for audience.

Students must include the student's name, birthday, three hobbies, and their favorite subject in school.

This objective is worth 20%

• Organize content sequentially or around major ideas.

The information presented must be neat and each item must have it's own slide

This objective is worth 25%

• Summarize main points before or after presentation.

Be able to introduce and conclude their presentations in a proper manner.

This objective is worth 25%

• Incorporate visual aids to support the presentation.

Use PowerPoint to introduce classmate, and within PowerPoint use at least two pieces of clip art.

This objective is worth 20%

The last objective is to work well together in pairs. The students will be assessed by the teacher by how they interact with their partner, work on the computer, and interact with the class during their presentation. This is worth 10%.

Materials

• Computers with the software for PowerPoint
• Rubric to be handed out by the teacher

Procedure

• Randomly divide class into groups of two.
• Give each group the following rubric:

• Content - Partner's name, birthday, three hobbies, and favorite subject in school
  • Exceeds Expectations
  • Has more information than listed, or elaboration on any of these items (16-20 pts.)
  • Meets Expectations
  • Lists all these items (11-15 pts.)
  • Does not Meet Expectations
  • Misses one or more of the items on the list (0-10pts.)

• Organization - Must be neat and have only one slide for each item on the list

• Exceeds Expectations
• Slides are colorful. Creative, and easy to follow (20-25 pts.)
• Meets Expectations
• Students have one neat slide for each item on the list (10-20 pts.)
• Does not Meet Expectations
• Slides missing, sloppy, jumbled (o-9 pts.)

• Presentation - Oral presentation to the class is presented in concise and appropriate manner

• Exceeds Expectations
• Creative, enthusiastic, and/or interesting presentation
• (20-25 pts.)
• Meets Expectations
• Presentation is concise and well-planned (10-20 pts.)
• Does not Meet Expectations
• Presentation is lengthy or not taken seriously (0-9 pts.)

• Visual Aides - Must incorporate at least two pieces of clip art in their presentation

• More than two pieces are included

• Two relevant pieces of clip art are present (11-15 pts.)

• Less than two pieces of clip art are added and/or the clip art is irrelevant (0-10 pts.)

• Group Work - Students must cooperate with one another, share the work load, and interact with class in presentation

• Pairs work quickly and efficiently, as well as getting whole class participation in their presentation (9-10 pts.)
• Meets Expectations
• Pairs cooperate with one another and engage the class in their presentation
• (6-8 pts.)
• Does not Meet Expectations
• Pairs work inefficiently, are not finished with the project on time, and don't consider the class in their presentation (0-5 pts.)

• Complete during an hour and a half of class time.
• Pairs give their presentations to the class.

Evaluation Procedure

The rubric above will be used to evaluate student's performance. The teacher will be walking around checking individual participation in the project.
