Target Group:Ê

5th grade ö concrete operational, talking, working together, computer, internet, drawing, starting to date, social, girls go through puberty, peer pressure, Abercrombie, develop faster, cliques, competition, Vygotsky-zone of proximinal development, industry vs. inferiority

 

Objective:

  1. Given different geometric shapes, students will be able to figure out the perimeter and area of each shape.
  2. Using Paintbrush, the students will draw geometric shapes (2 circles, 2 squares, 2 triangles, and 2 of your choice choosing from rhombus, pentagon, hexagon, octagon, trapezoid, diamond) in order to create a design or picture.Ê The pair will find the area and perimeter of each shape and the group to complete them correctly first will get a prize (turn them in to teacher and they will be numbered in the order that they are turned in and then checked).Ê There will be a prize for the most creative picture/design as well.

 

Materials:

-Computer, ruler, pencil, paper, calculator, formula sheet, protractor

 

Lesson Description:

  1. Pass out and review formulas for area and perimeter
  2. Pair students up and assign each pair a computer
  3. Explain objectives and purpose of lesson
  4. Have students open up Paintbrush and draw all the geometric shapes while you are walking around
  5. After 20 minutes, have students print out their pictures
  6. Have students find perimeter and area of each shape in their figures at their desks using the ruler, protractor, and calculator
  7. As students finish they turn them in to you but there is a 20-minute time limit for everyone.Ê Make sure the papers are numbered in order as they are turned in

 

Evaluation Procedures:

Teacher takes papers home and checks each paper to make sure areas and perimeters are correct.Ê The next day the pair who successfully completed the assignment will receive a prize.Ê Have a worksheet to be completed the next day in order to assess their capabilities.
