by being able to choose the correct blend given a picture.
If
You Give A Mouse A Cookie
By Brandi Simonson
- Students will demonstrate an
understanding of a word processing program as evidenced by being
able to create a new file, save a file, and print a file with
minimal assistance in the computer lab.
- Students will apply these skills
in a writing assignment .
- Students will be able to illustrate
their sentence.

MATH
- Collecting and Interpreting
Halloween Costume Data
- By: Kate
Norton, Kate McDonald, Jodi Eriksen
- Students will
take a poll of favorite Halloween costumes among first grade
students. They will record the votes onto a spreadsheet and create
a bar graph. They will use the bar graphs to answer questions
about more and less.
- Virginia
Math SOL
- 1.18: The student
will investigate, identify and describe various forms of data
collection in his/her world (e.g., recording daily temperature,
lunch count, attendance, and favorite ice cream).
- 1.19: The student
will interpret information displayed in a picture or object graph
using the vocabulary: more, less, fewer, greater than and less
than.
Graphing
Weather Data
By: E. Haley Stone
- Students will use graphs to
answer comparative and quantitative questions with 90% accuracy.
- Students will enter weather-related
data into a Claris Works spreadsheet with 95% accuracy.
- Students will use Claris Works
to make a bar graph of their data.
- Virginia Math SOL 1.19
- The student will interpret information
displayed in a picture or object graph using the vocabulary:
more, less, fewer, greater than, and less than.
- Students will describe how graphs
depict data.
"Coins"
By: Anne Blackmore, Ashley Nichole,
Melissa Gallagher, Erin Betts
Our lesson plan addresses two
Grade 1 Mathematics Standards of Learning, SOL 1.7 and 1.10. SOL
1.7 states that "the student will use problem solving, mathematical
communication, mathematical reasoning, and connections to: (1)
recognize the characteristics of pennies, nickels, and dimes,
e.g., color, size; and (2) Identify the value of pennies, nickels,
and dimes." SOL 1.10 states that "the student will (1)
count by ones to determine the total value of a collection of
pennies whose total value is 100 cents or less; (2) count by fives
to determine the total value of a collection of nickels whose
total value is 100 cents or less; (3) count by tens to determine
the total value of a collection of dimes whose total value is
100 cents or less; and (4) identify the value of a nickel, a dime,

SCIENCE
- Create a Pumpkin Book
- By: Missy
Hogg, Janice Kailos, Abby Upmeyer
- Students will
become familiar with the parts, needs and growing stages of a
pumpkin. They will create a PowerPoint Book answering questions
about the different parts of a pumpkin.
- Virginia
Science SOL &endash; Life Processes
- 1.4 The student
will investigate and understand that plants have life needs and
functional parts and can be classified according to certain characteristics.
- Measuring Height
- By: Sara
Knight, Hillary Pittman, Elaine Blasko, Pamela Harris
- Students will
measure their height in standard and non-standard units within
3 inches or one unit in the classroom. They will enter data collected
in a prepared template through Claris Spreadsheet in the computer
lab and interpret the data through graphs to compare height differences
between classmates.
- Virginia
Science SOL 1.1
- Length is measured
using standard and nonstandard units;
- Observations
and data will be interpreted with simple graphs.
- The Four Seasons
- By: Laura
Lewis, Erin Marder, Stephanie Saville, and Megan West
- Students will
identify all four seasons, determine appropriate clothing and
activities, and identify what happens to plants and animals during
the four seasons using a felt/flannel board with corresponding
season pieces. Using Microsoft Paint Template students will add
the leaf pattern, animals, clothing, and recreational activity
for the corresponding season, as well.
- Virginia
Science SOL
- 1.7 Students will investigate
and understand the relationship of seasonal changes and weather
to the activities and life processes of plants and animals.
Plants
BY:Leslie Pruitt, Kristin Maltman,
Lisa Berryman, Danielle Huret
- This lesson will cover part
of SOL 1..4 under the Life Processes Component investigating
the parts of the plant.
- Using the web page http://www.hhmi.org/coolscience/
students will be able to accurately identify the parts of the
plant including roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits.
