Halloween Newsletter

Students will produce a Halloween newsletter to send home to their families and to share with other classes in the school. They will brainstorm wacky fun ideas relevant to the Halloween theme. Student ideas should include poems, stories, recipes, jokes, trick-or-treating safety tips, costume ideas or other ideas.

Long Vowel Poems

  • Students will use the Internet to read poems and participate in fun activities that will help them learn long vowel sounds. There are a total of 10 different poems.
  • Virginia Language Arts SOLs - Reading/Literature
    • 1.5 The student will apply knowledge of how print is organized and read.
    • 1.6 The student will apply phonetic principles to read.

 

Stellaluna and Elmer

  • Students will be able to identify the beginning, middle and end sections of Stellaluna and Elmer. They will create a book report/PowerPoint presentation using their own sentences and present their book reports with small groups.
  • Virginia Language Arts SOL
    • 1.1: The student will read and comprehend a variety of fiction and non-fiction selections.

 

Telling Stories About Ourselves

Students will create a slide show using PowerPoint with their own photos and tell their story (what happened before, during, and after the photo) to their classmates. The students will get to know each other better by sharing their photos and stories.

The Mitten

Students will listen to the story, The Mitten, by Jan Brett. They will create their own PowerPoint Mitten book by placing the animals into a mitten - in the correct order they appeared in the story. They will also type the name of the animal into a sentence under the corresponding mitten.

Where the Wild Things Are

  • Students will draw a picture of a monster after reading, Where the Wild Things Are, and provide a written statement with at least 3 details describing their monster. Students will submit ane-mail to www.monsterexchange.org, including a scanned picture and statement.

    • 1.12: The student will write to communicate ideas.

Adjectives

  • This lesson will cover part of SOL 1.12 under the Writing Component.
  • Given a picture of a person, a place, and a thing, the students will be able to list, using a computer program, three adjectives for each of the items.

Phonics

  • Students will demonstrate an understanding of the blends that begin words, as demonstrated by being able to choose the correct blend given a picture.

If You Give A Mouse A Cookie
By Brandi Simonson

  • Students will demonstrate an understanding of a word processing program as evidenced by being able to create a new file, save a file, and print a file with minimal assistance in the computer lab.
  • Students will apply these skills in a writing assignment .
  • Students will be able to illustrate their sentence.

MATH

Collecting and Interpreting Halloween Costume Data

  • Students will take a poll of favorite Halloween costumes among first grade students. They will record the votes onto a spreadsheet and create a bar graph. They will use the bar graphs to answer questions about more and less.
  • Virginia Math SOL
    • 1.18: The student will investigate, identify and describe various forms of data collection in his/her world (e.g., recording daily temperature, lunch count, attendance, and favorite ice cream).
    • 1.19: The student will interpret information displayed in a picture or object graph using the vocabulary: more, less, fewer, greater than and less than.

Graphing Weather Data

  • Students will use graphs to answer comparative and quantitative questions with 90% accuracy.
  • Students will enter weather-related data into a Claris Works spreadsheet with 95% accuracy.
  • Students will use Claris Works to make a bar graph of their data.
  • Virginia Math SOL 1.19
    • The student will interpret information displayed in a picture or object graph using the vocabulary: more, less, fewer, greater than, and less than.
    • Students will describe how graphs depict data.

"Coins"

Our lesson plan addresses two Grade 1 Mathematics Standards of Learning, SOL 1.7 and 1.10. SOL 1.7 states that "the student will use problem solving, mathematical communication, mathematical reasoning, and connections to: (1) recognize the characteristics of pennies, nickels, and dimes, e.g., color, size; and (2) Identify the value of pennies, nickels, and dimes." SOL 1.10 states that "the student will (1) count by ones to determine the total value of a collection of pennies whose total value is 100 cents or less; (2) count by fives to determine the total value of a collection of nickels whose total value is 100 cents or less; (3) count by tens to determine the total value of a collection of dimes whose total value is 100 cents or less; and (4) identify the value of a nickel, a dime, and a quarter in terms of pennies."

SCIENCE

Create a Pumpkin Book

  • Students will become familiar with the parts, needs and growing stages of a pumpkin. They will create a PowerPoint Book answering questions about the different parts of a pumpkin.
  • Virginia Science SOL &endash; Life Processes
    • 1.4 The student will investigate and understand that plants have life needs and functional parts and can be classified according to certain characteristics.

 

Measuring Height
By: Sara Knight, Hillary Pittman, Elaine Blasko, Pamela Harris
  • Students will measure their height in standard and non-standard units within 3 inches or one unit in the classroom. They will enter data collected in a prepared template through Claris Spreadsheet in the computer lab and interpret the data through graphs to compare height differences between classmates.
  • Virginia Science SOL 1.1
    • Length is measured using standard and nonstandard units;
    • Observations and data will be interpreted with simple graphs.

 

The Four Seasons
By: Laura Lewis, Erin Marder, Stephanie Saville, and Megan West
  • Students will identify all four seasons, determine appropriate clothing and activities, and identify what happens to plants and animals during the four seasons using a felt/flannel board with corresponding season pieces. Using Microsoft Paint Template students will add the leaf pattern, animals, clothing, and recreational activity for the corresponding season, as well.
  • Virginia Science SOL
    • 1.7 Students will investigate and understand the relationship of seasonal changes and weather to the activities and life processes of plants and animals.

Plants

  • This lesson will cover part of SOL 1..4 under the Life Processes Component investigating the parts of the plant.
  • Using the web page http://www.hhmi.org/coolscience/ students will be able to accurately identify the parts of the plant including roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits.

Benjamin Franklin

  • Students will write one sentence and draw a picture about Benjamin Franklin on a kite they have cut out, providing one correct fact about his life/family, education/career, or his inventions. They will also create a brief Power Point presentation about Benjamin Franklin with three slides explaining one fact in each of the following categories: life/family, education/career, and his inventions.
  • Virginia Social Studies SOL
    • 1.2 The student will understand through biographies and stories the deeds for which our nation honors leaders from the past, including a variety of political, scientific, social, and military leaders, including Benjamin Franklin, George Washington Carver, Jane Addams, and John Paul Jones.

 

Create a Map of Your Favorite Room

  • Students will create a map of their dream room, a map legend of the items in their room using Kid Pix Draw, stamps and alphabet stamps. They will also record a 30-second narrative description of their room.
  • Virginia Social Studies SOLs Geography
    • 1.6 The student will construct a simple map of a familiar area incorporating cardinal direction, scale, and map symbols.

Art Safari

  • This lesson will affirm the students' creative expression through publication of their work on the web. The student will use the Internet to visit Art Museums before doing their activity.
