GRADE: High School
TECHNOLOGY: Internet, Desktop Publishing
Target Population:
French
one class--Students are learning basic vocabulary and sentence structures, and
are eager to apply this knowledge to more real-life applications. They are just discovering the French
language and culture; searching the web for information on various locations
provides a window into real French life. Developmentally, they are approaching the Formal
Operations stage. They still need
concrete examples but are becoming better able to think abstractly. This activity gives them concrete
actions to participate in, but also allows them to use abstract thinking by
creating their own travel itineraries.
This lesson provides a fun way of integrating technology; students can discover more about France
and its people by searching for information on different locations where they
can vacation. Students can create
something tangible that is their own, and perhaps maybe one day be able to
apply their travel plans!
Objectives:
(SOL FII.9-Identify similarities
and differences of the geography of francophone countries and the United States
and their impact on aspects of culture, such as clothing, foods,
transportation, dwellings, recreation, and the arts.)
1. Students
will utilize the web to research prospective destinations, given a list of
possible cities, in France. They
will cite the sources they used in their research.
2. Students
will plan a pretend weekend trip to France and create a travel itinerary and
brochure with at least four different cities to visit and at least seven total
activities to do. (i.e. Paris-visit the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and the
Champs Elysées; Montpellier-go to the beach; Normandy-learn about D-Day;
Grenoble-ski the Alps)
3. Students
will present their brochures and itineraries to the class, explaining what
cities they have selected and what activities they will be doing..
Materials:
-Computer with Internet access
-construction paper
-glue
-magazines
-scissors
-markers
Description:
Day One:
Students will spend the class period in the computer lab, conducting a
search on the web to help
them select cities in France that would interest them. They will be given a list of cities as
a starting point. Through their
search on the Web, students will discover the aspects for which these cities
are renowned and will later incorporate activities into their itineraries based
on what they find. Students
will begin a rough draft of their brochure at home.
Day Two:
Students will create their actual brochures in class using construction
paper and pictures cut from magazines and their proposed itineraries.
Day Three:
Students will present their brochures and explain the activities they
have selected and why those activities are important to their chosen
destinations.
Evaluation:
The students
will be evaluated using the attached checklist, which will be filled out by the
teacher after she has collected all of the brochures. Each student will get his/her own copy of the checklist.
