Author Resume

 

Target Group:

The General Tenth Grade World Literature Class is composed of 26 male and female students who have diverse home and academic backgrounds. Many have demonstrated a dislike for writing about or reading literature outside of contemporary fiction. More interest is shown when given the opportunity to explore literature of their own culture. In this developmental stage there are varying levels of academic interest and ability. This lesson will allow students to explore the backgrounds of various authors and develop the practical skill of constructing a resume. It is challenging but not overwhelming and therefore seeks to involve all students to the best of their abilities.

 

Objectives:

SOLs: English 10.4, 10.7, 10.8, and 10.10

 

§ Given a list of authors, the student will choose and research an author, participate in peer editing, and present the material in a resume format using word processing.

* Research Materials in Library

* Word Processing Software

* Internet Access

* AOL Search Engine for On-Line Sources

 

Lesson Description:

The student will be given a list of 25 authors. Choose one; research materials and online sources will be available in the library and computer lab. This lesson will be broken up over the course of a four-week period as time permits.

  Week One:

* Give approved author list to students

* Instruct students to choose author by next class

* Review project guidelines:

- Source limits

- Page limits

- Format

* Give sample copy out to students

* Review sample copy

* Discuss Content Expectations

* Educational Background

* Accomplishments

* Answer project questions

 

Week Two:

* Allow time for student research

-Monitor on-line computer activity

- Reserve library and computer lab time and space

- Reserve necessary printed materials

 

Week Three:

* Allow continued student research

* Take class to computer lab to compose project draft

- Reserve computer lab

- Provide passwords for computer

- Answer questions for project

- Monitor progress

 

Week Four:

* Assign Peer Editing groups of 3 students (randomly assigned by last name)

* Review Peer Editing process

- Proofreading Symbols

- Constructive Criticism

* Monitor Peer Editing process

* Allow Computer Revisions

- Reserve Computer Lab

- Monitor Computer Lab

- Answer Questions

* Collect Final Drafts of Projects
