COMPARING HAMLET
Target Population:
Tenth grade English class—Students have a grasp of Shakespearian literature and are eager to apply this knowledge beyond the classroom. They need extensive practice with literature analysis and computer technology, specifically the use of Power Point. Presenting a literature analysis to the class through a Power Point presentation allows students to practice their skills of analysis as well as familiarizing them with Power Point. Developmentally, they are approaching the Formal Operations stage. They still need concrete examples but are becoming better able to think abstractly and analytically. This activity gives them concrete actions to participate in, but also allows them to use analytical thinking by examining literature and designing elements, such as creative Power Point slides. This activity also uses several of Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences: linguistic, logical, and interpersonal. Students at this age may be uncomfortable speaking in front of a group, and although the activity requires that, they have the Power Point slides to accompany their presentation and support their arguments, and so leaves them feeling less vulnerable. Also, they enjoy creative projects and hands-on activities, and this plan tailors to their needs.
Objectives:
(SOL 10.3: The student will read and critique literary works from a variety of eras in a variety of cultures.)

-four film adaptations of Hamlet (Mel Gibson, Kenneth Branagh, Lawrence Oliver, Ethan Hawke)

-Students will view the film adaptation for homework.
-Explain to the students what the Power Point presentation will include: title slide, three slides depicting similarities, three slides depicting differences, and a conclusion slide. (For example, students should examine the conclusion of the film, lines that were cut, etc.)
-Students will have time in the lab to prepare the Power Point presentation.
