The Poet Project


Target Grade/Subject:
4th Block 10th grade English class, who have specifically requested a poetry unit and learn quickly. It is also a small class of only 13 students.

Objective
After a computer/web-building lesson and library time, 4th Blockers will create a “Poet Web page” with biographical info about a poet of their choice, analysis of two poems by that poet, two links to related sites, and a picture of their poet.

Materials
We need: thirteen computers (at least one week of lab time); thirteen disks; library time (go ahead and pull or bring some poetry anthologies).

Lesson Description
(Week before: tell students to begin to think about what poet they would like to choose for a project)

Day One:
Hand out guidelines, explain, answer questions. Go to library to begin researching poet. Have some anthologies set aside.

Day Two:
Continue library work. Serve as a resource. Proofread analyses.

Day Three:
Lesson on building a web page by myself or media center specialist. Students begin to put information on the page.

Days Four-Six:
Students continue to work in lab. Answer questions, serve as a resource, proofread analyses. Help to scan pictures.

Evaluation Procedure
Each student’s web page will include:
-a one-page bio of their poet
-two one-page analyses, proofread by me
-two working links to related sites
-a scanned image of their poet
