Having Fun with Mad Libs

Target:

The General Tenth Grade World Literature Class is composed of 24 male and female students, who have diverse homes and academic backgrounds. The group has proven to be self motivating and eager to participate in group activities. This lesson will enable the students to realize the power of diction and further explore the works of William Shakespeare.

Objective[s]:

SOLs: English 10.1, 10.3, 10.7, 10.10

Given a quote from Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, the student will participate in a creative Mad Libs style group activity to be presented on Power Point.

Materials:

Computers (access to Power Point presentation)

Text of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet

Lesson Description:

Teacher selects six quotes and letters them A, B, C, D, E, and F (These will later be our groups). Quote A: "What light through yonder window breaks?/It is the east and Juliet is the sun." (Act II, scene ii)

The teacher will extract parts of speech from the quotes, and will number them in sequence starting with A. Quote A: "What ___1___ through yonder window breaks?/It is the ___2___ and Juliet is the ___3___." (Act II, scene ii)

As a class, the teacher will collect the appropiate parts of speech and record them numerically on the board. For example: Teacher asks for a noun. Students respond with "turtle". Teacher lists "turtle" on the board as number one.

The teacher will create 6 groups of 4 students each (A, B, C, D, E, and F). Distribute corresponding quotes to the groups.

The teacher will instruct the groups to insert the chosen part of speech (from the numbered list on the board) into the numbered blank in their quote.

The teacher will take the class to the computer lab to create a Power Point slide demonstrating their understanding of the newly formed quote.

The teacher will compile the six slides into one presentation. Each group will present their portion of the presentation, discussing why they made specific choices during the creative process. The whole class will discuss how the new quote compares and/or contrasts with the original quote.
