STUDENTS TEACHING THE SOL

Target Grade/Subject

Twenty-six students make up an eleventh grade United States History class. These students are mainly sixteen and seventeen year-olds, in the transition from adolescence to adulthood. Their likes generate around their social atmosphere, and anything that does not actively involve them the students consider boring. Utilizing this knowledge, the students are separated into pairs to work on a hands-on project creating a power point presentation. They are in the concrete developmental stage, many times in order to easily learn information the students must have some activity that incorporates the material to be learned. This also provides a simplistic manner in which to reinforce historical events and people in the minds of the students. A project like the following not only enhances the history students learned, but also their presentation skills in front of their peers. The lesson as described is suited for a class on the block schedule system.

Objectives

The targeted Standards of Learning for this eleventh grade United States History Class lesson plan are SOLs 11:1-11:13.

Working in pairs students will use Power point to produce a slide show reviewing and emphasizing the key points from each section of the SOL, ultimately presenting it before the class.

Materials

Computer: Used for the necessary applications to complete the presentation.

Power point: Students will use this program to create a slide show and make it visually appealing.

Microsoft Explorer: Links and pictures will be gathered using web sites from the internet program.

Computer disks: Disks are issued to pairs so that their work can be saved, presented, and turned in for evaluation.

Lesson Description

Day 1:

  • a general explanation of the project

-Students will be paired off and given a specific SOL to explain using a power point presentation.

- They will be expected to make a slide show incorporating the key objectives in their assigned SOL.

-There should be at least one slide for each SOL subtopic.

-They will be expected to include pictures, sound, 2 internet links, a time line and a 5 question fill-in-the-blank review quiz with an answer page.

  • the students will use the last thirty minutes of class to review the SOL they have been given and brainstorm on ideas for their presentation
  • students will research their topic for the remainder of class and for homework
  • students will be given a copy of the rubric so they will know what is expected in their presentation

Day 2 :

  • regroup and allow 15 minutes to discuss their ideas
  • go over what is expected in their power point presentation
  • give them 5 minutes to go to the computer lab
  • tell them to use Power Point and Microsoft Explorer for their presentation
  • they have the remainder of class to work in the computer lab on their presentation
  • remind students to save their work on disks and give to the teacher at the end of the class

Day 3:

  • students will meet in the classroom and the teacher will redistribute the disks to the groups
  • teacher will check on the progress of each group
  • teacher will tell the students to save 20 minutes to review and practice their presentation
  • students will have 5 minutes to return to the computer lab
  • students have the rest of the class to finish their presentations
  • students will save their finished presentation on a disk and return the disk to the teacher at the end of class

Evaluation Procedure

Students will be graded for content, creativity, presentation skills, and a visually stimulating slide show.

This project will count as 15% of the students’ total grade.
