Frog Eggs

Most frogs lay their eggs in the water, but some species carry their eggs with them until they hatch.  Some frogs carry eggs in their mouth and some wind the eggs around their hind legs.

The number of eggs the frog lays and the amount of time it takes for the eggs to hatch is different for each type of frog.  The average time for hatching is 6 ñ 21 days.  All frogs lay many eggs at one time.  Some may lay up to 3,000 eggs at one time!  A layer of jelly surrounds and protects each frog egg while the tadpole inside is developing.  The clump of eggs sinks to the bottom of the pond at first.  Then the jelly fills up with water and the eggs float back to the surface of the pond.  When the tadpoles are fully developed, they push their way out of the eggs and swim out into the pond.
