Jane Addams was born on September 6, 1860 in Cedarville, Illinois, where she was raised by her father. During an outing with her father, the buisnessman, Jane observed many families living amongts very inpoverished conditions. In
the mean time, Jane attended Rockford Female Seminary from where she graduated in 1881. She was one of the only women to graduate with a degree (many women simply earned certificates). After, once again, coming into contact with the horrible conditions within impoverishe communities, Jane devoted herself to her life's work: Hull House.
In 1889, Jane and her friend Ellen Star bought Hull Mansion, which soon became Hull House. Here, she and others devoted their lives to helping the immgrants- especially children and women. Some of Jane contributions include:
- Getting the Factory Act 1893 of passed.
- Supporting Women Suffrage
- Building the first playground in an immigrant neighborhood.
