The Mattaponi Indian Tribe's reservation is located along the borders of the Mattaponi River, in King William County, VA. Many younger members have moved elsewhere to find employment.

The Mattaponi Indian reservation dates back to 1658. In that time, the people made their living completely from nature's resources and they worshipped the Great Spirit. Now, they worship as Southern Baptists and have their church on the Mattaponi Reservation.

In 1646 the tribe began paying tribute to the governor of Virginia, and this tradition continues today. Every November, the tribe presents game or fish to the governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
