Virginia Indians
Pamunkey Indian Tribe
The center of the Pamunkey Indian Tribe is in King William County, Virginia on the Pamunkey Reservation. They were part of the great Powhatan Empire under the direction and leadership of Chief Powhatan.
Chief Powhatan's territory encompassed the entire coastal plain from the North Carolina border to Washington D.C. He and his famous daughter, Pocahontas, lived among the Pamunkey people.
Members of the Pamunkey Tribe have made pottery for hundreds of years. Today, some Pamunkey women still make pottery. It can be seen in the Pamunkey Indian Museum, which is located on the Pamunkey Reservation.
