"Whoever controls the media - the images - controls the culture."
Allen Ginsberg |
Only a relative few get the chance to see the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade from the streets of New York, but millions more can experience representations of the event through a variety of media. Over the course of its 79 year history, the parade has been recorded in newspapers, magazines, books, art, TV, and film (not to mention advertisements and products). These representations have the power to influence people's perceptions of the parade as well as their perceptions of Macy's, Thanksgiving and Christmas, pop-culture, history, and the American way of life, to name a few.

Americans of multiple generations have been at least subtly influenced by these representations, in ways that would be difficult to assess. Far from attempting to dissect the many intricacies of media influence, these pages offer a brief overview of a few ways in which the parade has been recorded and represented to the masses. Use the menu at the top to learn more about TV, print, and film portrayals of the parade.
