The Williamsburg Theater Project is a collaborative enterprise. All the data about movie-going—films, screenings, events, ancillary evidence—is collected and entered by undergraduates in American Studies 202: Cinema and the Modernization of U.S. Culture at the College of William & Mary. The project is co-directed by Timothy L. Barnard, Visiting Assistant Professor of English and American Studies; Arthur Knight, Associate Professor of English, American Studies, and Film Studies; and Robert K. Nelson, Information Technology Liaison for the Humanities.

The WTP is part of the History of Moviegoing, Exhibition, and Reception (HOMER) Project. The HOMER Project aims to promote understanding of the complex, international phenomena of film going, exhibition, and reception through the collection, scholarly vetting, and sharing of new data on film going, exhibition, and reception and the creation of a portal website that brings these new datasets together and, ideally, makes them cross searchable.
