Patty has been a good addition for me, and I think could almost carry another strip herself. -Schulz |
With a name "inspired by a dish of candy that was sitting around the house," Peppermint Patty is the tomboy of the gang. This “whiz on the baseball diamond" is the epitome of female toughness. She is "brash and bold," but unable do better than a D- in class.
Always wearing her trademark sandals and in a constant struggle with school and sleep, she represents some of Charles Schulz’s deepest demons from his childhood. While an exceptional elementary school student, he “skipped ahead two and a half grades,” by the time he reached junior high, “the roof fell in.” Like Patty, his “grades were miserable,” and by high school “he failed at everything.”
Patty harbors a secret crush for Charlie Brown, the only one to call him “Chuck,” and maintains a close bond with Marcie who tries to help her in school and calls her “Sir.” While gruff on the outside, she has a soft interior: she is a daddy's girl with a penchant for figure skating.
