Types of Software
If you don’t realize how often you are exposed to some type of software everyday, here are some examples of the types of software used by Americans everyday:
-Productivity Software:
Productivity Software is also known as tool software. This kind of software is used to help produce documents, spreadsheets, a database, and other products. In a school setting, productivity software an example would be a Microsoft Word program for the students to write papers with, or Microsoft PowerPoint program for students to craft their own presentations, or even Microsoft FrontPage for students to be able to make their own web pages.
-Drill and Practice Software:
Drill and Practice software enable students the ability to practice concepts that they have already learned using drill and Practice Software. The best Drill and Practice Software gives the user feedback, explains how the correct answer is found, and keeps track of the user’s progress. An illustration of this would be the popular game that was popular ten years ago, “Math Blasters”. This software challenged users with mathematical problem solving.
-Problem Solving:
Problem Solving software requires that clients use strategy and input. The simulations require mental analysis and focus. Software that fits this description includes our main subject “ The Oregon Trail”.
-Tutorial Software:
Tutorial Software provides the user with text illustrations, descriptions, and simulations to teach the user a specific skill or task.
-Demonstration & Presentation:
Demonstration and Presentation software is designed to give the user power to create and craft computer presentations. Power Point is an example of this type of this software.
-Reference:
Reference materials are now being added to the list of software types that a consumer can buy. Many digital encyclopedias, dictionaries, and thesaurus’ now come in software versions, allowing the user to no longer need to go to the library for information. Webster’s Dictionary on CD is a model of this software.
-Multi Media:
Multi Media software refers to any software program that utilizes sounds, pictures, graphics, video, text and hypertext to stimulate the user.
-Games: Video game software allows the user to simulate problem-solving actions. Games that represent this type of software include Madden 2006, a popular sports video game or Halo 2, a hugely successful role playing video game.
-Group Ware: Software that is made to be used by multiple users simultaneously. This type of software is especially useful when being used with groups of students. The software can stimulate discussions and debate. Black Board is an example of this type of software.
