  • Use Keyword searches to find word(s) anywhere in record. To limit a keyword search to author, title, etc., select appropriate button. Use $ for variant endings: comput$ retrieves compute, computer, computation. Use "Advanced Search" for more keyword options.
  • Use Begins with to find lists of authors, titles, etc., that begin with your search term.
  • Use Begins with and PERIODICAL TITLE to search a periodical or journal
  • Subject searches use a controlled vocabulary

Swem Library Subject Guide: Anthropology
Provides background information and quick facts (primarily materials in Swem Reference). Includes resource guides that contain information relevant to anthropology and provides lists of publications in relevant subject areas. The Guide suggests how to find anthropology materials in LION. Also included are relevant indexes to periodical articles and selected web sites.

  • Anthropological Index Online  (1965-        )   
    Published by the Royal Anthropological Institute, covers the periodical collection of the British Museum Department of Ethnography (Museum of Mankind). Entries are compiled from more than 750 journals in all areas of anthropology and archaeology.
  • Bibliography of Asian Studies    (1971-      )   W&M 
    Contains more than 410,000 records on all subjects (especially humanities and social sciences) pertaining to East, Southeast, and South Asia published worldwide from 1971 to the present. Can limit searches to a particular country or region.
  • Expanded Academic Index/ASAP (InfoTrac)  (1980-      )   W&M 
    Coverage of articles from more than 1,800 scholarly and general-interest periodicals. Subject coverage includes humanities, social sciences, general sciences, and current events. Search by subject or keywords; can restrict by date or by refereed journal. Includes many full text articles.
  • Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe    W&M; SFC (limited to grad students and faculty)
    An interdisciplinary, full-text database of over 18,000 sources including newspapers, journals, wire services, newsletters, company reports, case law, government documents, transcripts of broadcasts, and selected reference works. Coverage generally begins in mid-1980s.
  • MLA Modern Language Association International Bibliography   (1963-      ) W&M; SFC
    Covers works on literature, language, linguistics, and folklore in all languages and formats, including films, sound recordings and electronic materials. Review articles that survey scholarly works are included, as are doctoral dissertations.
  • NewsBank   (1991-      ) W&M 
    Provides comprehensive coverage of news sources, broadcasts, and transcripts from hundreds of international sources. It provides an international perspective on events in Asia, Africa, Europe, Russia, Pacific Rim, Central and South America and the Middle East. It is useful for doing research on the politics, economics, culture, business, science and technology of all areas of the world. The database provides access by topic, keyword, date, and source and then provides the full text of the article(s) cited.
  • Newspaper Abstracts (FirstSearch)     (1989-      ) W&M; SFC
    Provides cover-to-cover indexing of articles appearing in the following newspapers: The New York Times, The Atlanta Constitution, The Boston Globe, The Chicago Tribune, The Christian Science Monitor, The Houston Chronicle, The Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post. 
  • PCI (Periodicals Contents Index)    (1770-1993)     W&M 
    An international, interdisciplinary index especially useful for finding articles published in the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries. Covers from than 2,300 journals, Includes index to subjects such as: anthropology, archaeology, architecture, art, black studies, business, economics, education, ethnology, geography, history, humanities, Jewish studies, law, literature, music, performing arts, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion, social sciences, women's studies.
  • Social Sciences Abstracts (FirstSearch)  (1983-     )     W&M; SFC
    Indexes international, English-language social science journals. Covers anthropology, economics, geography, law, planning and public administration, political science, psychology, and sociology. 
  • Sociological Abstracts (Ovid)   (1963-     )     W&M; SFC SocioAbs in FirstSearch
    Major resource for accessing the research literature in sociology and related disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences. It draws information from an international selection of over 2,600 journals and other serials publications, plus conference papers, books, and dissertations. The data base covers articles relevant to sociology and related disciplines such as anthropology, economics, education, health, social psychology, and political science from 1963 to the present.
