The Eating Behavior and Child Development Center, directed by Catherine Forestell, Ph.D. of The College of William and Mary, specializes in researching flavor and food preference development in children. We are also involved in the identification of strategies that increase children's liking and consumption of healthful foods such as fruits and vegetables.
In North America, obesity is considered to be the most widespread nutritional disease of childhood. In order to counteract this critical public health issue, various health organizations worldwide have implemented initiatives, such as the Food Dude Healthy Eating Programme in the UK, to promote healthier diets for children. Although these programs have had some success, the simple fact remains that children are emotional eaters; they eat the foods they like and reject those they don’t.
