T

he best place to learn about Earth history and the processes that currently modify our world is in the field. Virginia has many excellent locations at which to learn about the local geology.

When going to the field remember to be prepared for changing weather conditions and pay attention to safety--rocks can roll under foot and steep slopes can fail. All the sites listed are accessible to the public, but visitors should be mindful that outcrops should not be marred and that collecting samples is not allowed on National Park property.
