Resistant rock forms on the Piedmont

Folds in the Cambro-Ordovician Shelton gneiss are exposed along a roadcut on the north side of the Dan River in downtown Danville. The unit is a part of the Chopawomsic Volcanic Belt which was accreted onto Laurentia during the Taconic orogeny.
