Reddish sandstones and siltstones of the Devonian Hampshire Formation exposed in the Valley & Ridge province (William & Mary geologists for scale!). Sedimentary rocks of the Hampshire Formation were deposited in a foreland basin to the northwest of the ancient Acadian Mountains.
