Lake Matoaka Spillway, Williamsburg, VA

  • Eastover Formation (Miocene epoch)
  • Directions: Head west on VA-199 into Williamsburg. Take a right onto Jamestown Road at the stoplight. Continue for 0.7 miles. Turn left onto Millneck Road. Parking on right shoulder of the road. To get to outcrop, cross Jamestown Road on foot and follow guardrail to the other wall of the spillway. Cross over the guard rail and be cautious on the steep slope leading into the spillway floor.
  • Fossils: coral, gastropods, scallops, oysters, clams, barnacles, shark teeth, fragments of whale bone
