Westmoreland State Park:

  • Directions: Located north of Route 3, about 20 miles east of King George, VA.
  • The park is open year-round, with free admission and small parking fee ($2 on weekdays and $3 on weekends). Turn north on Rt. 347 at the entrance to the park and continue for about 3 miles to the fork in the road near the restaurant and park office. Parking available on the beachfront by bearing left on Rt. 347 and continuing for 1.5 mi. to near the marina; from here, hike downstream (east) to the cliffs on your right. Parking also available opposite the nature center: turn right at the restaurant onto Rt. 686, nature center will be immediately on your right. Hike through the gate beyond it to the nature trail. Follow this trail about 1 mile to the beach.
  • Fossils: corals, gastropods, clams, oysters, scallops, barnacles, brachiopods, bryozoans, crabs, coprolites, fish (scales and vertebrae), rays and sharks, turtle shell fragments, crocodiles (bony armor plates), horse teeth, whales and porpoises (vertebrae, teeth, and other bone fragments), petrified wood
