The National Institutes of Health (NIH) have revised their policies regarding budget requests in grant proposals. Beginning in April 1999 for most grant programs that W&M faculty often apply, NIH will require use of “modular” budgets in which funds are to be requested in $25,000 increments (direct costs only) instead of being compiled from detailed budgets.
College practices will remain the same in that faculty members submitting proposals should provide the Grants Office with draft budgets. These draft budgets will allow us to help you determine at what increment funds should be requested. You may use the NIH form DD to assist you as you develop the draft budget. (All the NIH forms--found in the PHS398 application package--are available in Adobe Acrobat format at the following address: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/phs398/phs398.html. If you would like these forms in MS Excel contact me.)
The only budget justification NIH requires is narrative explaining personnel costs and, when applicable, consortium/consultant costs.
If you have and questions about the AREA program, modular budgets, or electronic forms, please contact me. Thank you.
