Introducing Biology and Chemistry into the Secondary School Mathematics Curriculum

Over the past seven years our HHMI-funded initiative to develop mathematical biology at William and Mary has been enormously successful.  We therefore propose a pilot program to begin the task of introducing biology into the high school mathematics curriculum, both in the pre-calculus and calculus courses.  This will involve mathematics faculty working closely with local teachers to develop and then introduce biological examples that enhance students’ understanding of specific mathematical concepts while simultaneously demonstrating how math is required to solve a wealth of important biological questions ranging from population ecology to gene expression. Participating teachers will receive a small stipend as well as one graduate credit for their year-long participation.  For further information, please contact the Program Director, Margaret Saha (msssaha@wm.edu) or George Rublein (gtrubl@wm.edu) in the Dept. of Mathematics.
