While it is our goal to have all undergraduate science majors conduct an independent research project, it is becoming increasingly challenging given burgeoning enrollments and the increasing cost and sophistication of experiments.  To ensure that as many students as possible, both majors and non-majors, have the opportunity to participate in inquiry-based laboratory experiences, an important aspect of the W&M HHMI program has been the enhancement of both Introductory and Upper Level teaching laboratories.  HHMI funds have provided new equipment and enhanced laboratory exercises for the following laboratories.

Introductory Biology Laboratories:
     BIO 204—Ecology Lab;
     BIO 204—Genetics Lab;
     BIO 203—Molecular Microbiology Lab
Introductory Chemistry and Organic Chemistry Laboratories
Immunology Laboratory
Molecular Genetics Laboratory
Physiological Psychology Research Laboratory
Neurophysiology Laboratory

In addition to developing a range of interdisciplinary courses, our current HHMI grant is focusing on developing a non-majors interdisciplinary laboratory that would engage students in a variety of topical investigative exercises involving contemporary issues in science.
