In Memoriam: Chancellor Professor Richard A. Williamson

The Law School community was greatly saddened by the death of Dick Williamson on June 22 in Williamsburg. He joined the Marshall-Wythe faculty in 1970, became a full professor in 1975, and Chancellor Professor in 1986. He also served as the College’s Coordinator of Legal Affairs for the past ten years. Upon his retirement in April of this year, the Board of Visitors recognized his extraordinary contributions during his 37 years of service to the Law School and the College, and conferred upon him the title of Chancellor Professor of Law, Emeritus.

Loan Repayment Assistance Program Announces 2007 Awards

The Loan Repayment Assistance Program selection committee announced in February that six members of the Class of 2006 will receive loan repayment assistance, and, in addition, three graduates (two from the Class of 2005 and one from the Class of 2004) have had their awards from 2006 renewed. Established in 2004, in honor of Professor John Levy, the program assists graduates with loan repayment who work for private non-profit organizations or government employers.

Professor Paul Marcus of William & Mary Law School and Mary Sue Backus '01 of the University of Oklahoma Law School recently completed a comprehensive analysis of media coverage of indigent defense issues at the behest of the National Committee on the Right to Counsel. Their findings, gathered with the help of a team of William & Mary Law students, will be formally released in early 2007 and illustrate problems that are common across the nation and which undermine the fundamental right to counsel.

The Saturday (October 23rd) session of the Supreme Court Preview involved a series of panel discussions that dealt with specific areas of the law relevant to this year’s Supreme Court term. The panels involved discussions on topics as diverse as business, civil rights, and criminal procedure. The discussion on federalism, below, is an example of the type of important cases to be argued in front of the court this year and also the lasting impression this court has had in an area of the law.

On March 18, 2004, as part of its celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary hosted the Honorable William T. Coleman Jr. Mr. Coleman attended breakfast and lunch discussion sessions with small groups of students. The visit concluded with a speech given in Courtroom 21 at 3:00pm. The lecture focused on challenges facing the United States over the next twenty years and concluded with a call for the current generation of law students to rise to meet those challenges.

Ms. Suzan Harjo has not only a long history of successes in the protection of Native American interests and sacred places, she has a personal and traditional interest as well. The perspective she provides as a Native American woman is one that few have the opportunity to hear. William & Mary students were honored that she shared what traditional and cultural knowledge she was able to, recognizing that the common and exclusive knowledge of those values and beliefs are a very treasured aspect of Indian existence. Samuel Issacharoff Offers a New Thesis on California Governor's Race

Is there a context that makes Arnold Schwarzenagger's win in the recent California recall election a logical extension of current voting trends? Some Democrats in California saw the recall election as a far right campaign to frustrate the will of the people; some Republicans perceived it as a manifestation of their improving ability to bring their message to the people. In the James Gould Cutler lecture, on February 19, 2004, at William & Mary Law, Professor Samuel Issacharoff offered a third perspective. He contended that Schwarzenagger's election was the product of rebellion of center voters against the perceived closing off of the political process through the increasing polarization of the positions of the two majority parties.
