MEMBER TRIPS

OCTOBER 20, 2009
National Gallery of Art | Washington, D.C.

Armor from the renowned Spanish Royal Armory in Madrid will be paired for the first time with portraits by masters such as Peter Paul Rubens, Alonso Sánchez Coello, Anthony van Dyck, and Diego Velázquez depicting emperors and kings wearing the same armor in The Art of Power: Royal Armor and Portraits from Imperial Spain on display at the National Gallery of Art. This unprecedented exhibition, which explores how armor was used to cultivate the image of royal power in late fifteenth- to eighteenth-century Spain, highlights some seventy-five armors and paintings, in addition to magnificent tapestries and works on paper that depict armor worn in the courtly, chivalric context of parades, pageants, and jousting tournaments and occasionally, battles.

NOVEMBER 20, 2009
National Geographic Museum | President Lincoln’s Cottage Washington, D.C
.
In 1974, an accidental discovery led to the uncovering of what become known as Pit 1, near the burial ground of the first great Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huangdi. The underground deposit housed approximately 6,000 life-size figures, mostly infantrymen. Subsequent excavations at the site continued and over the years more discoveries were made. Other pits contained items including sixty-four chariots each manned by two soldiers with weapons, a cavalry of 108 horses, and armed cavalrymen. Arrangements have been made for Museum Members to visit the National Geographic Museum exhibition, Terra Cotta Warriors: Guardians of China’s First Emperor, where fifteen of the life-size figures will be on display along with weapons, armor, coins, and more.
That day we will also visit President Lincoln’s Cottage located on a picturesque hilltop in Washington, D.C., where Lincoln spent one quarter of his presidency. President Lincoln used the cottage as a quiet setting for important meetings, family relaxation, and solitary reflection as he pondered decisions of profound national importance. Opened to the public for the first time in 2008, our guided tour will offer an in-depth look at Lincoln the man and president.
