Core Requirement #2.4 (Institutional Mission)

The institution has a clearly defined and published mission statement specific to the institution and appropriate to an institution of higher education, addressing teaching and learning and, where applicable, research and public service.

Compliance Certification

The College of William and Mary is in compliance with this requirement.

Explanation

The College of William and Mary Mission Statement addresses all three of the university's primary functions—teaching, research, and public service. It emphasizes the historical and contemporary role of the College as a residential college with a unique mix of high-quality graduate programs.

The mission statement was approved by the Graduate and Professional Student Association, the Student Association Council, the Faculty Assembly, and by the Board of Visitors in 1994. It was reviewed and confirmed by faculty, staff, and the Board of Visitors in 1999 as a part of the review of the 1993-1994 strategic plan. The mission statement provides the link to all department and program purpose statements in the newly developed Process of Institutional Effectiveness, which ensures that the mission is reviewed periodically. The planning calendar for the process of institutional effectiveness includes periodic review of the mission statement by the Board of Visitors through periodic evaluation and planning activities.

The mission statement is published in the Arts and Sciences graduate and undergraduate catalogs and in the graduate catalogs of the following schools: Business, Education, Law, and Marine Science.
