Core Requirement #2.6 (Continuous Operation)

The institution is in operation and has students enrolled in degree programs.

Compliance Certification

The College of William and Mary is in compliance with this requirement.

Explanation

Founded in 1693 by royal charter from King William and Queen Mary of England, the College established schools in grammar, philosophy and divinity for the education of wealthy landowners' sons. By 1779, under Governor Thomas Jefferson's tutelage, the College became a "university" by initiating programs in modern languages and sciences. Barely surviving the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, as well as relocation of the state capital to Richmond, the College sought and accepted state-support from the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1906, and in 1918 became a co-educational state institution of higher education in Virginia. The 1960s saw the College attain modern university status as it expanded its campus facilities by nearly 100%, and received authorization to grant its first doctoral degrees in such programs as physics, education and history.
