Comprehensive Standard #3.2.1 (Governing Board Responsibilities)

The governing board of the institution is responsible for the selection and the evaluation of the chief executive officer.

Compliance Certification

The College of William and Mary is in compliance with this comprehensive standard.

Explanation

The Board is empowered to appoint a President, a Faculty, and such other employees as are necessary to conduct the activities of the College. See Code of Virginia 23-44 and the College of William and Mary Faculty Bylaws Preamble, paragraph 2.

The College of William and Mary Faculty Handbook (Faculty Handbook) Section II, Part B, incorporates the authorizing statements from the Code of Virginia and The College of William and Mary Bylaws.

The College of William and Mary Bylaws, Article II, Section I, paragraph 1 asserts that the President is accountable to the Board of Visitors. The board periodically evaluates the President, as is evidenced in the minutes from the Board of Visitors meeting on November 20-21, 2003 (page 7). The minutes reveal that the board reviewed the president and determined his salary based on that review.
