Comprehensive Standard 3.2.10: The institution evaluates the effectiveness of its administrators, including the chief executive officer, on a periodic basis.
Off-site review question:
“The administrators, excluding the chief executive officer, are evaluated on a periodic basis. While the president is clearly accountable to the Board of Visitors (Article II, Section I, paragraph one), there appears to be no formalized review process for the chief executive officer. The example from the Board of Visitors’ meeting held in November of 2003 (November 20-21, 2003) only indicates that the board met in closed session and set the president’s salary. (See also 3.2.1 above)”
Response:
On February 10, 2006, the College’s Board of Visitors passed a resolution amending the College of William and Mary Bylaws, adding the following sentence: “Annually at a date set by the Rector of the College, the Board shall conduct an evaluation of the performance of the President for the preceding year.” Please see College of William and Mary Bylaws, Article II, Section 1, paragraph 1 (original) and Article II, Section 1, Paragraph 1 revised.
