EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENT LEARNING

Basic Timeline:

 

(summer ’08) soundSCAPE festival ® (fall ’08) CAPE organized ® (fall ’08-spring ’09) composing/rehearsing/lessons/coaching ® (spring ’09) CAPE concert/assessment

 

 

Overall Learning Objective:

 

To develop advanced knowledge in the creation, preparation, and presentation of new music [It would be useful to identify specific learning expectations that align with the learning experiences described below.]

 

Learning Experiences:

 

Composers will

 

* Participate as part of a ‘class’ of select undergraduate and graduate composers from around the world in the 10-day soundSCAPE festival in Pavia, Italy

 

* Study composition with soundSCAPE faculty

 

* Compose a work or works to be performed by William & Mary students on the CAPE (W&M Composition And Performance Ensemble) concert in the following year

 

* Continue independent composition studies with W&M faculty

 

 

Performers will

 

* Participate as part of a ‘class’ of select undergraduate and graduate performers from around the world in the 10-day soundSCAPE festival in Pavia, Italy

 

* Study performance with soundSCAPE faculty

 

* Perform a work or works by William & Mary students on the CAPE concert

 

* Continue independent performance studies with W&M faculty

 

 

Composers and Performers will

 

* Found (inaugural year) or participate in (subsequent years) the CAPE

 

* Organize the annual CAPE concert

 

* Participate in rehearsals of new music (as composers and/or performers) as part of both the soundSCAPE Festival and the CAPE

 

* Compete for awards in composition and performance on the CAPE concert

 

 

Other William & Mary Students will

 

            * Join the CAPE as upper-level (junior and senior) performers and composers

 

            * Compete for awards and scholarships to the soundSCAPE Festival

 

 

 

ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT LEARNING

 

Individual Assessment:

 

Assessment points

 

* Faculty instruction and advising at the soundSCAPE festival (in rehearsals, lessons, master-classes, etc.)

 

* Faculty instruction and advising through lessons and independent study at W&M

 

* Coaching in rehearsals for CAPE concert

 

* Juried evaluation by faculty committee following CAPE concert (in conjunction with the determination of awards for outstanding composition and performance)

 

 

Assessment criteria [Following  from the above example, these assessment criteria describe how the learning , as expressed in one or more compositions, will be evaluated.
