Composers' League Constitution:
ARTICLE I: NAME OF THE ORGANIZATION
The formal name of this organization shall be the "Composer’s League of the College of William and Mary." The informal name shall be the "William and Mary Composer’s League."
ARTICLE II: PURPOSE OF THE ORGANIZATION
The purpose of the organization shall be: to encourage and orchestrate performances of original works by student composers; to provide a means for attending musical conferences, especially for composition and to submit compositions for competitions or grants; to create and maintain a journal devoted to music; to organize events involving well-known composers and other musicians; and to help cultivate music here at the College
ARTICLE III: MEMBERSHIP
Application for membership will be open to students at the College of William and Mary who have both strong interest and basic working knowledge in music composition, music theory and traditional Western orchestration and arrangement. Membership application will be approved by the Principal Advisors.
ARTICLE IV: OFFICERS
Section 1: Principal Advisors
Two Principal Advisors are responsible for the following: approving applicants for membership, appointing the President, approving and working to bring in guest lecturers and composers, assisting and finalizing entries – either compositions or personnel – into conferences and competitions. The Principal Advisor is an indefinite term and successors are appointed by the resigning/retiring Advisor.
Section 2: President
The President, serving a two academic year term, is responsible for organizing monthly meetings and the overall discussion of members’ works in addition to working with the Principal Advisors on matters pertaining to membership, compositions, guests and conferences and the other officers on their responsibilities.
Section 3: Vice President
The Vice President, serving a one academic year term, is responsible for recruiting candidates for membership, organizing and realizing events pertaining to the Composer’s League including but not limited to setting up events and preparing press releases and announcements.
Section 4: Secretary
The Secretary, also serving a one academic year term, is responsible for minutes during the regular meetings of the League, organizing and collecting the paper work and responsible for directing the publication of the Composer’s League Journal.
Section 5: Treasurer
The Treasurer, also serving a one academic year term, is responsible for drawing up a budget for the League with assistance from the President and the Principal Advisors as well as keeping a record of all financial transactions.
Section 6: Webmaster
The Webmaster is appointed by both the President and the Principal Advisors to maintain the web site of the Composer’s League.
ARTICLE V: ELECTION
Section 1. Elections in General
Elections will be held during the month of April of each academic year with the specific day determined by both the President and the Principal Advisors. The officers will begin their term of office at the beginning of the next academic year in August.
Section 2. Appointment of the President
The President shall be appointed by the Principal Advisors, determined by an application process that is opened to all members of the Composer’s League who are rising sophomores or juniors (current freshmen or sophomores).
The aspects that shall be addressed will include: musicianship, leadership, musical achievements, the applicant’s compositions, dedication, motivation and character.
Section 3. Appointment of the Other Executive Board Officers
The office of Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer are elected by the members of the Composer’s League.
Nominations will be open the meeting prior to the election and close on the day of election.
On the day of election, the nominees will present their speech of no more than ten minutes before the Composer’s League and votes will be cast – nominees for each office will wait outside – and the winner will be determined by a simple majority vote.
Elections results are final and cannot be disputed.
ARTICLE VI: COMMITTEES
The Executive Board – Principal Advisors, President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer – shall have the power to create, appoint, maintain and dismantle any committee deemed necessary for the fulfillments of the purposes of the Composer’s League.
ARTICLE VII: MEETINGS
There shall be monthly meetings throughout the entire academic year, whose time shall be determined by the member’s schedules, covering the following topics: compositions of the members, compositional methods in general and upcoming events of interest for the Composer’s League.
ARTICLE VIII: DUES
No dues are required for the selected members of the Composer’s League.
ARTICLE IX: AMENDMENTS
The Constitution of the Composer’s League can be amended during the annual elections by a three-fourths majority or at the suggestion of both the Principal Advisors.
