Dear Prospective Rushee,

I would like to begin by congratulating you on your decision to participate in fraternity rush. I made the same decision three years ago, and it is one of the best ones I have made to date. The best piece of advice I can give you concerning the rushing process is to be open minded and to give every house a chance. Your final decision is one that will affect the rest of your college career and accordingly, should be well thought out.

On behalf of the brotherhood, I would like to welcome you to the Delta Phi house and thank you for considering us during this rush season. To be honest, as an entering freshman, I didn’t really consider greek life as an option for me; however, after some thought I decided to give it a try. As I’ve already mentioned, it was the best decision I could’ve made.

Fraternity men weren’t, as I imagined, a bunch of rowdy, wasted college guys spending their days hung over and their nights drinking themselves into a coma. Visiting Delta Phi immediately blew away every negative stereotype I previously held. In fact, most of the fraternities on this campus are a far cry from what you see in Animal House, but there was something different, something extra in Delta Phi.

As I approached the white house on Armistead Avenue, I was greeted by the site of brothers talking amongst themselves and with other rushees on the front porch. Immediately I felt at home, as if this were the place I’d unknowingly been trying to find all along. It can be a little intimidating walking up to a group of guys for the first time and trying to start up a conversation, but the brothers made it easy. As I climbed the steps, a few brothers immediately walked over and introduced themselves and made me feel more comfortable. As the night wore on, I met many new people, but more importantly I witnessed what it means to be a brother, not just a friend. As the semester continued, I got to know the fraternity pretty well, and they me. When bid day rolled around, I eagerly accepted.

I have absolutely no regrets about joining Delta Phi. I have made many very close friendships starting with the members of my pledge class as we helped each other through the process, then soon after with the rest of the brothers. It is exciting to me and all of my fellow brothers to see you at what could be a huge turning point in your life.

I've learned that a fraternity can offer you quite a lot, as long as you are willing to offer a little of yourself in return. If you do end up joining one of the fraternities at this college whether it is Delta Phi or not, I wish you the best of luck, and I hope you someday find out, as I did, what true brotherhood really is.

Sincerely,

Delta Phi Seal

Gentlemen,

While our president’s letter to you all is one of the many thoughtful testimonies that you’ll hear from our brothers as to why we chose Delta Phi, our letter to you should lend perspective to the fraternity rush process. Rushing a fraternity can be a foreign, at times awkward, endeavor. Certainly, the process can feel rushed, hence the term “rushing,” but we at Omega Alpha spend the entire first semester and the first month of the second semester getting to know each rushee personally. This allows ample time for you and the brothers to determine if Delta Phi is the house for you. We pride ourselves on our thoroughness and selectivity in the rush process. That being said, we don’t care what you look like, how much money you have, or what type of clique you are a part of—we are looking for men that will make good brothers. The quality of your character is of paramount importance to us.

As rush chairs it is our job to help make this process a little easier, so we are offering some advice. First and foremost, be yourself. There is no substitute for sincerity. While there are many approaches to rushing, here are four important things to keep in mind:

  • Meet the brothers and get to know them as friends. This will increase the value of your time spent with the brothers and help you see what the fraternity is all about—friendship.
  • It is important to attend as many events as possible. This is how both you and the brothers make an informed decision.
  • Relax. Brothers want to get to know you, but this is your chance to learn about Delta Phi by feeling free to ask any questions on your mind. You control your own rush experience.
  • It is important to go to other houses. We know why our house stands out as superior to us, but it is hard to have a full appreciation for Omega Alpha without having any basis for comparison. We are proud of where we stand in the Greek community on this campus and we want you to have a sense of our place at the College.

We hope you enjoy our events and please let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or problems at any point during the rush process.

Sincerely,
