William and Mary Martial Arts Club

Welcome!

Have you always wanted to try martial arts? Want to get involved in a style that has been around for centuries and was practiced by the samurai? Well you found it! The William and Mary Martial Arts Club was the first martial arts club on campus, established in 1969. We are associated with the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai (Greater Japan Martial Virtue Society) which was established in 1895 by the leading military elites in Kyoto under the endorsement of the Meiji Emperor. It was the first official martial arts institution in Japan sanctioned under the government. Today there are groups all over the world that practice with this organization. So come and join us!

Training offered:

Aikido and Aikijujutsu

Aikido is the art of flowing with an opponent's energy. It focuses on circular motions, defending techniques, and locks. Training will also incorporate proper breathing, building of mental and physical strength, safe landings of falls and throws, and overall understanding of the philosophy and aesthetics of Aikido and it's predecessor Aikijujitsu..

Karatedo

This training concentrates on the basics of traditional Japanese Karatedo, the way of the empty hand. Training will focus on inner discipline and building one’s personal mental strength through practice of several defensive techniques such as blocks, kicks, strikes, and Kata (martial arts training forms).

Other training opportunities:

In addition to Aikido and Karatedo classes, other specialized training sessions will be offered where students can train with several other members of the Dia Nippon Butoku Kai. These sessions may include training in Jujitsu, Kendo, Iaido, and Kobudo. Please see the Up Coming Events page or contact Valerie Villanueva for more information.

I have never done any martial arts before, can I still come?

Of course! We always welcome new students. It doesn't matter if it is the beginning, middle or the end of the semester, we would be happy to teach you at any time. You do not need any martial arts experience at all to join us and we always are happy to see a new face. Click on the link When and Where above to check out our schedule.

If you have any questions at all, please ask us. We would love to hear from you. Please contact Valerie Villanueva at martia@wm.edu
