Before you start training

At your first workout

  • Arrive early 10 -15 minutes before the scheduled time. This will allow you time to find the dojo, change if needed, and introduce yourself to the members and instructors.
  • If you need to change and we are in W&M Hall. There are restrooms on the level above the bottom floor. Most locker rooms on the dojo level are locked. In Adair there is a locker room on the bottom level.
  • Wear loose fitting clothes that will be easy to move in or a plain white karate style Gi with a white belt.
  • Remove everything from your pockets and all jewelry. Bring a gym bag or something to put your things in.
  • Before you enter the dojo remove your shoes and socks.
  • Move to just inside the doorway. If several people are entering at the same time, please spread out so that everyone can enter together.
  • If a black belt is in the dojo
    • Wait for them to notice you.
    • Stand at attention with your hands at your sides and your belongings set neatly beside you.
    • When they bow to you bow twice towards the front of the room. Bend at the waist to about 50 degrees. Let your hands slide down to your knees when you bow.
    • Enter
  • If no instructors are present
    • Stand at attention with your hands at your sides and your belongings set neatly beside you.
    • Bow twice towards the front of the room. Bend at the waist to about 50 degrees. Let your hands slide down to your knees when you bow.
    • Enter
  • After you enter the dojo take your belongings and place them neatly against a wall out of the way. How you place your items reveals a lot about your mind set. Shoes should be together toes facing in and other items placed neatly beside them.
  • Move into the middle of the room and stretch/warm up. If mats are present or you are doing Aikido, bow once before stepping onto the mats.
  • When a black belt arrives stand up and face towards them. They will bow twice (just as you did). After they finish bowing, bow once in response.
  • Be ready to start.
