New Members
This page is designed to give new members a check off list of sorts.
Before you start training
- Email a club officer or instructor, that you will be joining the club. See the contact page for current contact information.
- Fill out a Rec. Sports waiver form and bring it with you to the first training session you attend. www.wm.edu/recsports/sportclubs/waivers/martialarts_waiver.pdf
- Fill out a DNBK general release form and bring it with you.
- Find out the current training location and time for the style you would like to study. When & Where.
- Inform the instructors of any injuries that may impact your training.
- Pay your dues for the semester. There is a two week trial period for new members.
- Visit http://www.tbkd.org/dnbk/mntc/DontKnowUserName.CFM and create a log in.
- Fill out the entry as best as possible.
- Choose a dojo
- William and Mary Martial Arts Dojo : Aikido or
- William and Mary Martial Arts Dojo : Karate
- The instructor will receive and email to activate your account.
At your first workout
- Arrive early 10 -15 minutes before the scheduled time. This will allow you time to find the dojo, change if needed, and introduce yourself to the members and instructors.
- If you need to change and we are in W&M Hall. There are restrooms on the level above the bottom floor. Most locker rooms on the dojo level are locked. In Adair there is a locker room on the bottom level.
- Wear loose fitting clothes that will be easy to move in or a plain white karate style Gi with a white belt.
- Remove everything from your pockets and all jewelry. Bring a gym bag or something to put your things in.
- Before you enter the dojo remove your shoes and socks.
- Move to just inside the doorway. If several people are entering at the same time, please spread out so that everyone can enter together.
- If a black belt is in the dojo
- Wait for them to notice you.
- Stand at attention with your hands at your sides and your belongings set neatly beside you.
- When they bow to you bow twice towards the front of the room. Bend at the waist to about 50 degrees. Let your hands slide down to your knees when you bow.

- After you enter the dojo take your belongings and place them neatly against a wall out of the way. How you place your items reveals a lot about your mind set. Shoes should be together toes facing in and other items placed neatly beside them.
- Move into the middle of the room and stretch/warm up. If mats are present or you are doing Aikido, bow once before stepping onto the mats.
- When a black belt arrives stand up and face towards them. They will bow twice (just as you did). After they finish bowing, bow once in response.
- Be ready to start.

- Ranks from this club are recognized throughout all DNBK dojo's.
- Ranks of brown belt and above are recognized internationally.
- Rae (Ray) : bow
- Kyotske (Key oat skay): Stand at attention.
- Sempi- Used to address a black belt whose title you do not know.
- Ko Ki Nimu Kate: face the national flags
- Yudansha Numu kate: face the black belts
- Tesshin Sensei nimu kate : Face Sensei Tesshin Hamada (in spirit)
- Kata: Pre defined training form
- Kokyu nage: Aikido breath throw series of techniques (will be followed by a number ending in hon, bon or pon: Ichi pon me is number one)
- Ki hon or tenshin kihon: aikido striking series of techniques (will be followed by a number ending in kyo : Dai Ichi kyo is number one)
