September 9, 2009 The 2009-2010 school year is less than three weeks old and the Pep Band has already been literally instrumental in two historical events. On the first Friday of the year, the Pep Band participated in the opening convocation ceremony, one of William and Mary's greatest traditions, for the first time. The event was a huge success, and the administration hopes the Pep Band will be able to be involved in the event in the future.
On September 5, the self-governance of the Pep Band realized its full potential. Pep Band leadership contacted the University of Virginia and got permission for the Pep Band to travel and play at the opening game of the season this fall. As you surely know by now, W&M defeated UVA for the first time since 1986, and the Pep Band won significant praise. One alum said, "the Pep Band was remarkable from 40 minutes before the game's start to the raucous support all game long." Another wrote, "the Pep Band was awesome and a large part in helping the Tribe crowd cheer on the team."
The Pep Band was able to be part of this historic event because, thanks to the generous support of people like you, FWMPB was able to pay for the transportation. With your continued support, FWMPB will be able to continue to help the Pep Band in the years to come.
Contributed by Kenny Barry '08October 4, 2008 On Saturday, October 4th, the William and Mary Pep Band once again took to the field in front of a full crowd for Family Weekend. After the reluctant early morning wake up (8:30 am) that a show day calls for, there were no hints grogginess once half time rolled around. The members of the Pep Band agreed that getting up early was worth it, as Chris Givens, '10 said he "could really hear the crowd laughing and see them dancing." The hour long rehearsal before the game is used to fine tune the show length by making last minute changes to the script, and the only chance the band has to run through the show on the field prior to the performance. This show marked a movement toward new technology for the Pep Band, as the script made use of the new video board that was installed last year, with excellent success.
The show was the first of the season for the 2008-2009 edition of the Pep Band, which has once again grown in size. With over 90 members on the roster this year. One of the newest members, Monika Bernotas, '12 has been ready to join the Pep Band since the summer when she first heard about the scramble shows, and that the whole idea "sounds perfect!" As the Pep Band completes its first decade of student run leadership, the future looks very bright. Now as one of the older members, Hayley Tartaglino, '09 says that the "Pep Band provides the sound track for [her] life."
