Glossary

"This section will give you some terms about the SCA comes from "Good Grief, what do they mean by that?" and some local terms. Email the Webminister if you want something added.

Atlantia -

Kingdom that encompasses Maryland, most of Virginia, North and South Carolina, a bit of Georgia. Atlanta is one of 17 Kingdoms in the world.

Arts and Sciences -

Those medieval crafts and skills which we research and practice in the SCA.

Autocrat -

The person in charge of the event.

Berley Cort -

Shire that encompasses the Cities of (Southern) Suffolk and Franklin, and the counties of Greenville, Isle of Wight, Southhampton, Sussex and Surry in Virginia.

Bardic Circle -

An informal gathering for singing and storytelling.

Caer Mear -

Barony that encompasses the Cities of Colonial Heights, Hopewell, Petersburg & Richmond, & Albemarle, Amelia, Caroline, Charles City, Charlotte, Chesterfield, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Fluvanna, Gloucester, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, King and Queen, King William, Louisa, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, Powhatan, Price George and Spotsylvania Counties. Subgroups include College of Yarnvid, College of Caer Gelin, and Incipient Canton of River's Point.

Chatelaine/Castellan -

A gentle who helps new members learn about the SCA.

Chirurgeon -

A gentle who can administer first aid at events.

Chivalry -

A person recognized by the King, Queen, and other Chivalry as one who possess prowess in heavy weapons combat and chivalric virtues.

Court -

A gathering of the royalty to make announcements and present awards at events.

Crash Space -

Informal lodgings with members of the group holding events.

Crown Tourney -

Event where the next King and Queen are chosen by single combat.

Exchequer -

Treasurer for a group or kingdom.

Fealty -

The fidelity of a vassal or feudal tenant to his lord.

Feast Gear -

A place setting for feast.

Garb -

Clothing based on that worn during the Middle Ages or Renaissance.

Gentle -

Any person.

Knight -

Member of the Chivalry who swears fealty to the Crown.

Laurel -

A person recognized as one who excelled to a high level in an art or science and who possesses great virtue.

Marinus -

Barony that encompasses the cities of Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and VA Beach, & Isle of Wight County.

Marshal -

Specially trained person who oversees combat activities.

Master of Arms -

Member of the Chivalry who does not swear fealty to the Crown.

Mundane -

Modern, not in the SCA. Some take offense at this.

Peer -

A Knight, Laurel, or Pelican.

Pelican -

A person recognized as one who has served their Kingdom and the SCA greatly and who possesses great virtue.

Period -

The years between 600-1600 that the SCA recreates; more loosely, the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

Persona -

The background and attitude that a person uses during an Event when they pretend to be from the Middle Ages.

Post Revel -

A party after the main event for socializing and unwinding.

Regnum -

List of officers for each branch.

Rencester -

College that encompasses the City of Williamsburg and James City County.

Royal Peer -

A Count, Countess, Duke, or Duchess. These people have served as King or Queen.

SCA Name -

The name someone uses in the Society.

Seneschal(e) -

Group administrator and legal representative of the SCA.

Site -

The place where an event is being held.

Tir-y-Don -

Barony that encompasses the Cities of Hampton, Newport News and Poquoson, & Gloucester, James City and York Counties.

Troll -

The place to check in or buy at the door admission to an event.
