Student Mentor Program

About SMP

The Student Mentor Program (SMP) exists to aid admitted freshman and transfer students in their transition to The College of William and Mary by offering them the opportunity to receive academic from upperclassman mentors during the summer before their first year and thereafter as needed. The SMP works closely with the Director of Academic Advising to enhance the advising process for new students, and seeks to:
  • Recruit and train rising juniors and seniors each spring semester to serve as mentors
  • Ensure that mentors are well-matched with incoming freshmen according to specified criteria such as declared/intended major and extracurricular interests
  • Foster relationships with other academic organizations and administrative departments that will help to train mentors and support the program
Membership in this organization is restricted to juniors and seniors as mentors and freshmen and incoming transfer students as mentees. The Student Mentor Program maintains an open membership to all qualified rising Juniors and Seniors enrolled at the College.

New mentors are selected via an online application process, which includes a minimum Grade Point Average qualification and a review of applicants’ judicial and/or honor records by the Dean of Students Office.

After a candidate has been approved for membership in the SMP as a Student Mentor, they are required to participate in training session(s) during the spring semester and sign the Student Mentor Contract pledging their commitment to fulfilling their obligations to their assigned mentees. Signature of the contract signifies official admittance into the organization.
