Student Mentor Program

Here is a listing of the SMP Executive Board Positions & Descriptions:

Director
The Director shall:

  • Organize and preside over all Executive Board meetings
  • Meet regularly (i.e. weekly or every other week) with the Advisor
  • Monitor and guide the organizational activities of all officers, committees, and members
  • Be the spokesman for the Student Mentor Program; meet regularly with representatives of other student organizations and the College administration, faculty members, and others involved in Academic life and the first year experience on campus
Assistant Director
The Assistant Director shall:
  • Assist the Director in planning and facilitating meetings with the Executive Board
  • Lead specific tasks and projects as delegated by the Director and/or Advisor
  • Work with the Director to divide the management of the chair positions – e.g. into internal (Mentor Coordinator, Training, Standards, Finance, Administrative) and external (Public Relations, Recruitment, Development)
Recruitment Chair
The Recruitment Chair shall:
  • Coordinates the recruitment of new (and returning) Student Mentors in the Spring through heavy advertising around campus in a variety of venues (with as much planning as possible in the Fall)
  • Works with IT Chair and academic advising to produce the SMP Application and Dean of Students office to check Student Mentor honor/judicial records
  • Works with Assistant Directors on awareness and PR of SMP
Training Chair
The Training Chair shall:
  • Plan the training program for Student Mentors in the Spring (with as much planning completed in the Fall) – this involves updating the SMP Manual, room scheduling and AV needs (and other logistics), setting training agenda (work with evaluation results provided by Assistant Director), enlisting speakers for the training program, working with IT Chair in facilitating an online training for mentors abroad, possible separate session for returning mentors and communicating with Student Mentors on training-related questions and concerns
  • Work with Assistant Director on coordinating evaluation of training
Finance Chair
The Finance Chair shall:
  • Work with the Director and Assistant Director to formulate a fiscal budget for each school year
  • Create a budgeting proposal in accordance with the funds allotted to the SMP by the Student Activities Office
  • Manage the organizations’ funds, which will involve maintaining records of transactions, writing checks, reimbursing Executive Board members for making purchases on behalf of the SMP, and ensuring that funds are allocated solely for SMP-related expenses
IT Chair
The IT Chair shall:
  • Responsible for keeping website up to date and well-maintained (requires lots of initiative on the Chair's part), including an archive (password protected) of minutes on the site provided by Admin Chair
  • Works with Assistant Director in implementing assessments online
  • Works with Recruitment Chair in getting Mentor Registration online
  • Works with Training Chair in coordinating online training for abroad mentors
  • Keep Exec board informed of information collected through online means
