Pregnancy Resources Forum
On October 26, 2005, SFL hosted a group of representatives from several organizations, both on/off campus, who discussed resources available in our community for students who experience an unplanned pregnancy and want to have their child while continuing their education.
Here is the list of groups who were represented:
|
On-Campus Student Health Center |
Off-Campus Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia (operates a pregnancy care center on Jamestown Rd) |
We also presented information from Residence Life and the City of Williamsburg Department of Social Services. Each of the speakers talked about their particular services, and then the floor was opened up to questions and concerns.
Toward the end, the speakers asked the audience what suggestions we had for improving their services. There were many good questions and answers. Here are our notes--they contain an outline of the resources each representative spoke about and the suggestions.
We have also put together a pregnancy resources brochure. One of our goals is to have it approved by the administration so that it may be available at the Student Health Center, Counseling Center, etc.
We were very heartened to see that this forum showed that there was a need for improvement in our community, and that there are people who want to make changes. We hope that we can now begin to work with the administration and other groups to make those changes a reality.
