The 2007 competition season was a very successful one for the Mermettes. In January, the Gold team cut their winter vacation short for a week of intense, twice-a-day practices—an appropriate introduction to the competition season! The Mermettes kicked off the season with a sweeping victory at the William and Mary Invitational, placing first in all of the routine categories and overall against all of the teams in the Virginia area. In the month of February, the Mermettes placed a firm second to the former national champion Ohio State University synchronized swimming team, certainly an exciting achievement. After surviving twelve hour long bus ride to the University of Georgia, the Mermettes took 3rd overall at the Southern Regional Championship for the first time in several years. Finally, the Mermettes survived another long bus ride to Wheaton University in Norton, Massachusetts to compete at the Collegiate National Championship, swimming against every collegiate program in the nation. To top off an already victorious season, the Gold team (composed of advanced swimmers) made finals, placing 10th in the team event-- matching last year’s highest placement to date! The Green team (made up of novice swimmers) put on an impressive performance placing 19th, and defeated their local rivals from the University of Mary Washington and George Mason University. |
