The British Corner Shoppe & Café
By Shelbi Wilson
The British Corner Shoppe & Café is a quaint restaurant tucked out of the way of the usual traffic in Williamsburg’s Historic Area. There is a bright atmosphere in the café with friendly service and plenty of sunlight indoors, as well as an outside patio for dining.
Located beside A. Carroll’s Bistro, the café prides itself on its made to order fresh sandwiches at reasonable prices. Sandwich choices range from the “Winston Churchill” (ham, capicola, and cheese) to the “William Shakespeare” (turkey, pepperoni, and cheese) and even the “Humpty Dumpty” (egg salad). Bread varieties range from white, wheat, sub, or baguette breads and cheeses are sliced when your order is placed. The sandwiches are then prepared with your choice of all the usual accessories.
The café has sandwich combos, which include a sandwich or a sub, a drink, and choices such as soup, salad, potato salad, or chips. There is a limited selection of desserts including cookies and brownies. Beverages are also limited with soda, tea (hot or cold), coffee, bottled drinks, and imported British sodas available. They also carry a variety of British goods from Cadbury chocolate to crisps (chips) to cheese and even meat pies.
The British Corner Shoppe also runs a catering business for sub sandwiches, wraps or pinwheels, desserts, and boxed lunches. With such reasonable prices, their services would be great to accommodate any event you might wish to have catered.
As of September 16, the café is running a special where one dollar from every purchase of coffee, hot tea, or iced tea is being contributed to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. They also have a large bin where they are accepting food donations for the victims. Their regular running special is a ten percent discount for all William and Mary students with their id card.
