YEARLY SUMMARIES2003-2004 Because we were a new team, our first year was primarily spent in the developmental stage. We started with filling out all the necessary paper work for the Recreational Sports Department. Once all the initial paper work was done, we were given practice times. We only had a minimal practice turn out, but those members that came did so regularly. The club team is fortuante to have encouragement, assistance, and coaching froma William & Mary Varsity Wrestling legacy, Glenn Gormley. Mr.Gormley (Gorms) is the owner of the beloved GREEN LEAFE CAFE' and has served as William And Mary's varsity assistant head coach when we still had a team. With the efforts of the team's leadership in conjunction with the advice and assistance from Mr.Gormley we were able to do what many students before us had tried to do: we got the club off the ground and running. Our greatest problem was the lack of funding. Seeing as we were only a new club in the early stages of development we did not have a budget. All money came directly from donations from members and fundraising activities. However, we hope to continue fundraising next year and receive some financial support from the department of Rec Sports. Though we had many obstacles such as low initial participation and no money, we did see many successes. First, we had t-shirts made and distributed to all the members in order to get the word out. Second, we raised enough money to join the NCWA and to renew membership for the 2004-2005 season. Finally, we had enough money, with the help of the NCWA discount and reimbursement from the department of Rec Sports, to order uniform singlets from Cliff Keen Athletic. As a result of our work during the 2003-2004 season, we are ready to compete with other colleges in our conference and to grow as a club team. Our mission for the entire year was to get our feet wet with learning how to be a club team, gain members, get ready for a full season of competition for the following year, and hopefully get some competition. Unfortunately, we did not get to compete with other colleges. But if our first year is any indication of how well we can accomplish our mission goals from year to year then we look forward to being a fully functional and very involved wrestling club in the NCWA. |
