What’s New for Parents?
Positive Parent Involvement Kit
By Lee Canter
Canter’s Positive Parent Involvement Kit addresses the need for
effective parental involvement in children’s educational and social environments.
The kit provides a variety of resources that speak to academic and behavioral
challenges facing parents and teachers. After studying and taking part in the
activities included in the kit, parents and teachers master skills and strategies
that make them successful partners in children’s educational and social
experiences. The kit includes the following:
• Homework Without Tears: A Parent’s Guide for Motivating Children
to do Homework and to Succeed in School by Lee Canter and Lee Hausner,
Ph.D.
• Assertive Discipline for Parents: A Proven, Step-By-Step Approach
to Solving Everyday Behavior Problems by Lee Canter with Marlene Canter
• Lee Canter’s Parents on Your Side: A Teacher’s Guide
to Creating Positive Relationships with Parents by Lee Canter and Marlene
Canter (Resource Materials Workbook included)
• Four effective parenting books covering homework, behavior, study skills
and the reluctant reader
• Parent video programs (2 VHS videos including a leader’s manual)
• Teacher video programs (4 VHS videos including a leader’s manual)
Parents Are Teachers
By Wesley C. Becker
Parents Are Teachers presents a child management program to assist
parents in making positive changes in their children’s behavior. Each
unit of the book describes the benefits of using consequences, reinforcers,
and punishers to teach children affirmative ways to be happy and successful.
The book can be easily read and understood by educational professionals and
parents alike. For example, technical words are referenced with a definition
at the bottom of the page containing the words. At the end of each unit, parents
are asked to complete exercises by writing in the answers to check whether they
have understood what they have read. Parents are urged to keep records of behaviors
they are trying to change. Later, these records serve as a tool to see if they
have learned to become more effective teachers of their children. The author
hopes that parents are able to make positive changes in themselves as well as
their children by following these strategies.
