Feature excavation can be a messy business, especially in the waterlogged soil that filled this privy feature. Digging in sections reveals a mini “history” of the feature through the layers of soil and feature shape visible in the profile (above). For efficiency, some of the field crew dig while others sift the excavated soil or collect soil samples (right).
