1894

By looking at copies of old fire insurance maps, we were able to track changes in the Front Street neighborhood and houses. Many of the changes were also reflected in property values listed in city tax records. The upper map shows the site locations plotted on an 1894 map. By 1899, the forerunner of Front Street, at first called Short Street, was laid out and street number labels appeared in front of the houses. The house within Site 44PY178 and the house in front of 44PY181 were subdivided into two dwellings ("D"). Another duplex appears in front of the west half of 44PY181. The next map shows that a large dwelling north of Site 44PY178 was converted into a boarding house. Only five years later, this buidling had been removed. Later insurance maps show this lot remained vacant.
